Crested Gecko Care
Crested Gecko
(
Correlophus ciliatus)
Crested Geckos are native to New Caledonia, an island in the South Pacific, where they inhabit humid, tropical rainforests. They are arboreal, meaning they live primarily in trees, and are nocturnal, active mainly at night. Crested Geckos grow between 7-9 inches, including their tail, which they can drop but will not regenerate. They are known for the crest of spines that runs from their eyes to the tail
Lifespan:
15-20 years in captivity.
Sexing:
Sexing can be done around 6-8 months of age. Males develop pre-anal pores and hemipenal bulges, while females do not.
Enclosure:
Juveniles: 12"x12"x18" vertical enclosure.
Adults: 18"x18"x24" vertical terrarium.
Substrate:
We recommend a loose substrate that retains humidity, such as a blend of coconut fiber and orchid bark. This mix mimics their natural forest floor environment and helps maintain necessary moisture levels.
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Area: Not needed
Ambient Temperature: 78-80°F.
Cool Side: 70-75°F.
UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended.
*Important: High temperatures (above 85°F) can cause significant stress and overheating.
Humidity:
Crested Geckos require moderate to high humidity, between 60-80%. Mist the enclosure twice daily to maintain humidity, and provide a humid hide to assist with shedding.
Food:
Crested Geckos are omnivores. Feed them a diet of commercial powdered Crested Gecko food mixed with water, supplemented with live insects such as crickets or dubia roaches once or twice a week.
Water:
Crested Geckos will drink water droplets from misting and may drink from a shallow dish. Always ensure a clean water dish is available, though they may prefer to lick moisture from leaves or surfaces.
Supplementation:
For insect feeding:
Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.
Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health.
